For the third year in a row, The Boys & Girls Club of Southern Highlands hosted Serevi Rugby coaches and USA Rugby players participating in the Las Vegas International 7s Tournament. Serevi Rugby has been introducing the Southern Highlands to rugby through free demos around the LVI tournament. This year’s demo included World Rugby Hall of Famer Waisale Serevi, USA Women’s Assistant Coach Richie Walker and several current and former members of the USA 15s and 7s Men’s & Women’s National Teams including: Matt Hawkins, Ryan Carlyle, Myles Craigwell, Ida Bernstein, Tim Stanfill, Hannah Lockwood, Mike Palefau, Kevin Swiryn, and Bianca Dalal.

The kids were divided into four groups and rotated through a series of progressive activities and small side games lead by the rugby players and coaches. Serevi Rugby believes in developing rugby skills and understanding through games. Each child participated in a mix of cooperative and competitive games to develop their individual skills and to hone teamwork. Activities included a group warm up and cool down, Sharks & Minnows, Ultimate Rugby & Tag Ball. “Serevi has brought their players and rugby simulated games in a clinic fashion to our kids now for a few years. It’s an awesome event every year and our kids look forward to interacting with the players. The tickets that are given to our kids makes the whole experience really real for them and gives them an opportunity to support the team at the actual tournament! – Willis Brown, Director, Southern Highlands BGC

NIK_1394In addition to the two hour demo at the Southern Highlands facility, the club received a bag of 10 Gilbert rugby balls, while each child received ticket to the international rugby matches at Sam Boyd Stadium and a Serevi Rugby t-shirt. Being able to play a new sport with current players and then watch the game come to life at a professional event makes the learning process and introduction to rugby both exciting and rewarding. We look forward to coming back to the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Highlands for years to come and cultivating rugby between their families and local rugby organizations.
Thanks again Southern Highlands BGC and see you in 2016! Check out some more images on Facebook.
