Serevi Powers Three Teams at Elite City 7s

THE TEXAS RUGBY scene is exploding and showing no signs of letting up. Houston has become a familiar destination for international rugby players and fans since BBVA Stadium began hosting international matches for the USA Men’s 15s and played host to the second round of the Women’s Sevens World Series in 2013. This coming summer, high-level rugby will once again travel to Houston for the inaugural Elite City Sevens Competition featuring all-star teams from cities across the country. The USA’s recent exposure to international rugby on home soil has not only sparked an interest in potential fans, but also increased the participation and level of play of club rugby across the country.
MORE PLAYERS & TEAMS means more competition and Serevi Rugby is nurturing this growth in every way possible. Serevi develops players and coaches from five-year-old athletes and the newest coaches through to international stars. In addition to camps and coaching courses, Serevi develops teams and clubs through sponsorships and partnerships. Glendale’s Rugbytown 7s was the first USA-based tournament to be powered by Serevi and allowed the company to showcase athletes of their programs on the international stage.
ELITE CITY SEVENS (EC7S) will feature twelve city-based all-star teams competing for a trophy and an opportunity to play in the World Club 7s at Twickenham Stadium in London. Serevi Rugby will sponsor three of the competing teams–from Chicago, San Diego, and Seattle, providing each with coaching, game support, and uniforms.
Chicago’s team will be led by Aaron Manheimer. Aaron began coaching with Serevi Rugby after six years of coaching the national powerhouse Chicago Lions 7s. As a 7s coach, Manheimer won a national championship in 2007 and the Las Vegas International in 2011. Richie Walker of the USA Eagle 7s coaching staff for men and women, will coach the San Diego 7s team at EC7S. Richie has been coaching with Serevi since 2010 and has worked with rugby players of all ages and skill levels. His experience with the Eagles as well as San Diego Club teams will make for a seamless transition to coaching the San Diego All Stars at EC7S. Ben Gollings and the King – Waisale Serevi — will coach Seattle 7s. The 7s legends will work with USA Men’s 15s assistant coach, Justin Fitzpatrick, to select the Seattle team competing at EC7S.
SEREVI RUGBY anxiously awaits the announcement of rosters and anticipates seeing names of players who participate in their high performance programming at the USA Rugby Academy (USARA) and the Serevi Rugby Institute (SRI). Each year the SRI and USARA visit 30 cities with an elite coaching staff comprised of USA Eagles and coaches from the 7s and 15s national teams. This past year, over 3000 athletes polished and refined their skills in drills and game-like exercises at Serevi’s weekend training camps and monthly institutes.

The Elite City Sevens Competition will be played at the Houston Sports Park on Friday, June 6th and Saturday, June 7th.
