Serevi Staff Picks Their Top 10 American 7s Tournaments

With the spring seasons all wrapped up, the energy in the Serevi Rugby office is boisterous.  We are excited about our seasons’ successes and even more excited for 7s season to start. Serevi staff, coaches, administrators, and executives at the Seattle Headquarters compiled a list of our favorite 7s tournaments in North America.

#10 SHOWDOWN AT THE SHORE

showdown at the shore
An unfortunately popular MTV series has made the Jersey Shore seem best appreciated from a far, but after a stellar debut in 2013, Monmouth Rugby Club is bringing back Showdown at the Shore to Thompson Park. The tournament hosted in the heart of the Jersey Shore, features brackets for Men and Women Premier, Men and Women Club, and High School Boys and Girls. Opposite the NY7s, Monmouth 7s is the unofficial kickoff to the Northeast Men’s and Women’s 7s Series and in its first year, it was recognized as one of the largest tournaments on the east coast with 500 athletes and over 1000 fans expected to attend. Players and fans can make a weekend of the event as the pitch is minutes away from the beaches and party scene the Jersey Shore is best known for.[/two_thirds_last]

#9 CAPE FEAR

cape fear
This is the largest two-day tournament in the Southeast and typically features some of the best competition in the country. More than 70 teams head down from around the world to compete across 6 divisions for both men and women. Odgen Park, where the tournament is played every year over July 4th weekend, is in the heart of a four mile long beach island in Wilmington, North Carolina. Before heading to the pitch, we suggest catching the sunrise at the beach.[/two_thirds_last]

#8 NEW YORK 7S

NY7s[/fusion_builder_column_inner][/fusion_builder_row_inner]
This is the 55th year of the New York 7s Tournament – the largest and longest running sevens tournament in the United States. The New York Rugby Club has hosted The Tournament on the Saturday following Thanksgiving since 1959, and it traditionally marks the end of the fall rugby season in the Northeast. Last year there were 133 teams in 10 divisions and NYRC says they still want more. Can anyone say, “#BetterNeverStops?” Serevi Rugby loves NYRC’s goal to make the New York 7s the top rugby sevens destination in the USA and to attract teams and players from across North America and worldwide to compete and enjoy a rugby packed weekend in the heart of New York City. The tournament is played at Randalls Island, is free for spectators, and offers cash prizes in the men and women’s premier divisions.[/two_thirds_last]

#7 IRB ATLANTA 7S

atlanta7s[/fusion_builder_column_inner]
In 2013 we saw the IRB Women’s Series take its first steps forward into an exciting new era, a focus on the development of elite women’s international rugby. This year the second round of the Women’s Sevens World Series took place in Atlanta, Georgia hosted by USA Rugby. A new venue, new fans, and an opportunity to once again showcase the best Women’s Rugby Sevens in the world makes this one of Serevi’s favorite tournaments. Following a dramatic opening leg in Dubai and with the 2016 Olympic games only just round the corner, the importance of USAs performance is huge. The USA hosting a stop on the developing IRB Women’s World Series provides a connection between Serevi’s grassroots and rugby programs and our national team. Around the event, Serevi Rugby hosts training camps open to all rugby players, featuring international players and coaches. Participating athletes get to meet the players and receive free admission to the games in the stadium.[/two_thirds_last]

#6 CAN-AM 7S

CanAm7s[/fusion_builder_column_inner][/fusion_builder_row_inner]
Last year’s 35th edition of the Can Am 7s made the tournament a personal favorite of the Serevi Staff. The Bellingham Rugby and Polo Fields host the event where 26 teams compete in three divisions. Why do we love it? Because USA’s representation by Seattle-based clubs dominate the Canadian competition! The tournament acts as a qualifier for the Pacific Coast Championship held here in Seattle, Washington. Last year the Serevi sponsored teams including Seattle OPSB and Eastside Lions joined the Chuckanut Bay and Seattle Mudhens in the finals of their respective divisions.[/two_thirds_last]

#3 USA SEVENS LAS VEGAS INVITATIONAL

LasVegas[/fusion_builder_column_inner]
Being able to watch some of the quickest and most agile athletes in the world from 16 countries on American soil is a gift from the rugby gods. Putting that experience in the heart of the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” was an incredibly twisted idea courtesy of USA Sevens, the City of Las Vegas, Hard Rock Hotel, and Sam Boyd Stadium. Within proximity to the stadium are both downtown Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Strip, ideal for dining, shopping, entertainment, lodging, and memory making….or forgetting? USA Sevens and the LVI host over 45,000 passionate fans to two full days of rugby capturing international broadcast attention for all forty-four games. Patriotically costumed fans are entertained by the fast paced, high scoring games, as well as the electric atmosphere created by the Fan zone experience full of live music, food and drinks, giveaways, and contests. The party doesn’t stop at the whistle. The official USA Sevens parties, Serevi Rugby photo booth, exclusive socials, and the other auxiliary events continue to add to the festive spirit of the tournament all night long.[/two_thirds_last]
